It’s Cherry season!

The farmers markets and produce stands are officially buzzing with crowds sourcing the freshest and most delicious summer produce. Walk up to any booth at a farmers market right now and I bet you this pregnancy superfood will be on the table: Cherries.

If you’re not eating them already, you should add cherries to your pregnancy diet. Why? A – because they are fresh and local right now. And B – because they are a pregnancy superfood.

Cherries as a pregnancy superfood

Every week on my Instagram page I feature a pregnancy superfood and this one is so good I had to write it up here.

Cherries are high in antioxidants. Just look at that rich red colour that stains your fingers after you eat them. When produce is this rich with colour, you know it’s packed with antioxidants and tons of vitamins and minerals.

According to Mom Junction, Cherries also have Anthocyanins which protect fetal neural cells and brain health, prevent headaches, and help combat the inflammation behind pregnancy related swelling and joint pain.

Not to mention Cherries are an awesome constipation treatment if you’re having any issues there (you’re pregnant, it’s normal).

Embrace the pink pregnancy power of cherries to nurture your pregnancy!

How to eat them 

You can eat them up as a snack food, but I’m going to suggest you blend up your cherries to create a delicious pregnancy superfood frozen yogurt (that can become a smoothie, sorbet, or popsicle depending on your mood) like I did. You can leave in or omit the pineapple depending on whether or not you have any. If you’re experiencing heartburn, it might be best to go napple-less.

Pink Pregnancy Superfood Power: Cherry Frozen Yogurt

Yield: 4

Ingredients

  • 1.5-2 cups pitted cherries
  • 1 cup chopped pineapple (optional)
  • 1 cup greek yogurt
  • 1 tsp maple syrup
  • 4 cups ice

Instructions

  1. Add all ingredients to high speed blender in the order listed, blend, and enjoy!

Customize your pink drink! Here’s how:
For a sorbet, omit the yogurt.
To make a popsicle, simple pour into mold, freeze, and enjoy.
For a green smoothie, go crazy and add some greens.

Delicious any time of day, this cherry goodness is best consumed at night so that the melatonin that is abundant in cherries can help you have an undisturbed sleep, especially if you’re having trouble sleeping these days (I wonder why that could be?)
